The Mom Scene… fun and unique things for moms and their families!

Meet Jennifer! She will be writing blogs once a month on cool places around the Tomball and Houston area for local moms and families! She is absolutely fabulous and I just love her and her three gorgeous little girls! I met her when she and her husband had a family session with me last fall (I actually went to high school with her husband) and when I put a call out for a guest blogger she applied… when I read her family blog I was hooked and had to offer her the position! She will be going around town checkout out places and reporting them back here… and I will, of course, be posting photos of each new venture!:)

For her first blog post Jennifer went to visit Nonnies, the new super cool and fun Soda Fountain Shop in Tomball!:)

Nonnie’s Soda Fountain in Old Town Tomball is an old-fashioned soda shop straight from the 50’s.  You walk in and are instantly transported into a scene from “Grease” (minus the random bouts of song and dance).   Old Coca-Cola advertisements and miniature classic cars adorn the walls, and a vintage (working!) jukebox holds court in the corner.  A chest-high marble counter dominates the front room, where patrons can sit and enjoy a milkshake or ice cream soda. My older two girls and I went in on Saturday for lunch, and were tickled pink (as in Pink Ladies!) by the whole experience.

Okay, that’s my last “Grease” reference.  I promise.
The cozy space serves up sandwiches, soups, hot dogs, and of course, ice cream, daily.  They offer old fashioned hand-drawn sodas from the fountain for only $2.50, and you can add flavored syrups to customize your concoction.   And did I mention that the menus are printed on LP records?
We sampled three hot dogs: one plain, one chili, and one “puppy dog”, which means its half size for kids.  All of their meals come with a side of chips and a pickle.  The hot dogs were messy and delicious, and isn’t that exactly what a hot dog should be?
And then there was dessert.
Oh my.
Getting three women (even if two of those women are under the age of six) to agree on a dessert in a soda fountain can get pretty heated, especially when there were so many options.  The choices were endless!  Ice cream cones, milk shakes, malts, ice cream sodas, sundaes galore! Cobblers, brownies, how’s a girl to choose?
Finally, we settled on the Banana Split. But, for extra fun, we had it “Do Wop” style, where you get to pick any three ice cream flavors and toppings.  We opted for two scoops of chocolate and one of strawberry, with hot fudge, strawberries, whipped cream, and cherries on top.  Sweet, sweet decadence.  Our darling waitress in her turquoise and pink uniform crafted it behind the counter before our eyes, and I swear I think I saw my three year old drool a little.
The homemade ice cream is to die for – so rich and creamy, it just melts on your tongue.  Nonnie told me that the secret is in the butter cream content.  Apparently most ice creams are made up of about ten percent butter cream, but Nonnie’s is around eighteen percent.  And believe me, that makes a BIG difference!
In addition, Nonnie’s offers generous cups of coffee and sells candy by the pound.  It’s a kid’s – and mom’s – paradise!
Here’s what Mom liked:  The kitschy décor, the friendly staff, the expansive and reasonably priced menu
Here’s what the kids liked:  The hot dogs, the ice cream, and the juke box
Go check it out for yourself!  Nonnie’s Soda Fountain is located at 102 Market St, Tomball.  It’s across from the Tomball Historic Depot Plaza, where tons of community events are held on the weekends.  In fact, there was a car show going on while we were there!   Also, be sure to check out their Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Nonnies-Soda-Fountain/130227200384385
And here are some of Jennifer S’s Instagram (if you don’t instagram, you should it’s so much fun!) shots of her visit with her girlies!:)
Of course you know I had to get one of my oldest enjoying the soda fountain shop when I went back for the photos, kids seriously love this place…
Don’t forget to check in with us next month for the new featured local business! Also, if you own a local business and would be interested in joining in on the fun here, shoot me an email!:)
