winter… houston and Galveston beach photographer

During the winter I don’t shoot as much because I am typically busy behind the scenes working on end of year things and brainstorming new ideas for the new year. That said, I have been shooting more this January than I normally do. I have a backlog of sessions that I need to blog as well. They will all be coming shortly! I recently returned from Atlanta where I was at Imaging USA. I had a great time with all of my photographer friends as well as meeting new ones too. But. I missed my babies. So when I got back I took them to Galveston for a quick day out and of course it was chilly, no where near as chilly as Atlanta was, but still… This shoot is actually for a big project that I have in the works. I can’t wait to share it…

Don’t forget that I do have my beach mini’s coming up in April! I expect them to fill pretty soon since we are finally getting to where Spring is just around the corner so be sure to contact me if you are interested in grabbing one! Another year is almost over… Houston family and child photographer

I really cannot believe that we are only a few short days from Christmas and starting a new year. 2012 has been full of growth, love, challenges, creativity, new adventures and some pretty amazing clients. I’ve been very blessed to spend the last year photographing some of Houston’s most lovely families and their children. For this, I am incredibly thankful. I started out thinking I would post this blog as a top 12 of 2012, but I started going through the last 52 weeks worth of images and I could not narrow it down, no matter how hard I tried! Sooooo… instead of doing that, I thought maybe I would just do a little recap from all the sessions I had this year with my lovely clients. Your trust in me to capture your family and memories has been a wonderful honor and I’m so blessed to call you my clients/friends/and now some are even like family. Thank you for a fabulous 2012 and I wish you all joy and happiness this Holiday Season, may you be surrounded by your families and much love! I look forward to an even better (if that’s possible) 2013! xoxo

You’re a big girl now… houston child photographer

Last weekend we went to Galveston for my beach sessions to wrap up the summer fun… I also decided to set up a shoot for M’s 5th birthday. She LOVES horses and she loves the beach, what would be better than combining the two to commemorate the big “5″?! I called the wonderful folks at Beach Bum Horse Rides and set up the session. M was in complete disbelief that she got to spend the evening with not one, but three sweet horses. There was one that stole her heart from the beginning, a sweet older horse, Daisy, that unfortunately lost her right eye. M was drawn to Daisy and asked all about her and listen intently when his owners explained what happened to her. I love how children can see right past any minor imperfections and love someone for who they are! She is still talking about Daisy and the other two horses – Seven and Cisco. It was so much fun to get to see her with the horses and we can’t wait to do it again next year.

Happy 5th birthday sweet girl! Last night you asked me if you were going to be a big girl today, and while you might have just gained another year… you are still my baby.

”I’ll love you forever,

It’s almost gone… houston beach photographer

Summer, that is. It seems like it flew by. A few months ago I was in Galveston for a beach session and I of course took my children out the next day while we were still there. I know I’ve posted some of these images before but some of them I haven’t and I have slowly been working through them as I had time. I love the beach and since our house is on the market right now, I’m slowly trying to convince my husband that the next best move for us would be the beach… He’s not buying it. At all. He grew up in Galveston and he doesn’t want to return… so it’s on to plan B… somehow coerce him to move to St. John, or anywhere in the Caribbean for that matter. hehe!

Since I never had a chance to make it back down to the beach for some summer mini photo sessions, I was thinking about having a few, very limited, sessions there about mid to late August… one last trip to say good by to the summer and hello to the fall. My fall calendar is almost completely booked, there are only a few sessions left for the year and I will be opening up 2013′s calendar at the end of October. If you are interested, just let me know and I’ll fill you in on the rest of the details. Til then, enjoy the sand, sun and waves…

Hello there… houston family photographer

A few months ago I hired the wonderful people over at A&A Video to help me create a video that would show you a little bit more about me and how I work and why I chose to be a photographer. Welllll… I finally got the completed video and I’m so very excited to share it with everyone today!!! I want to tell the families that were there with us thank you as well as our very generous hostess!!! They were so sweet and wonderful and we had such a great time filming this…

P.S…. I’m totally uncomfortable in front of a video camera and I’m a big dork. ;o)

More than a piece of paper…. the woodlands tx child and family photographer

There are so many aspects of photography that I love. It’s a creative outlet, I get to connect with beautiful families and their adorable children, it allows me to help other families to document where they are in their lives, but what I love most is that it stops time. Completely and totally stops a moment in its tracks. There aren’t many ways to do that… in fact I don’t know of another way other than with my shutter.

While I was unpacking samples, prints and canvases at the new studio space last week, I came across a print that I had ordered of my daughter. It’s a relatively new photo, taken last month at the tail end of the bluebonnet mini sessions. I was dog tired by the end of the sessions and my husband had returned to help me load up all my larger props and he brought our two kiddos with him. Even though it was getting really late and there really wasn’t much light left I snapped a few of my own children.

As my husband was moving stuff back to our car, my daughter laid down on this cute little toddler bed that I had been using and she was so sweet asking how my clients were and how the “photography” went. She is really into what I’m doing lately, which is pretty awesome. As we were chatting I got this image….

Then I edited it and fell in love with it and… LEFT IT ON MY COMPUTER. Until, last week, when it arrived as a 10×15 (I know, it’s an odd size) to be hung on my wall. And as soon as I unwrapped it, I got all sappy (even my very laid back husband was struck by it)… though this photo was made over a month ago I was instantly snapped back into that moment… I could remember how humid it already was and the crickets were chirping, it felt like the beginning of summer in Texas and here we were in this gorgeous country field having a little conversation about our day.

I love these little moments and she’s getting older by the second so I want to remember as many of them as possible. Now when I see this photo I can do that. I know that in our very digital age, everyone likes to get the digital files and I totally get that. I want them too… but this just reminded me that these photos I make are not meant to be kept on a computer. At the studio opening last weekend, I was talking to another photographer and good friend about how much more “alive” the photos look as prints… it’s just so different than seeing them on a computer or an iPad. I know I’m definitely guilty of not printing enough photos too, just ask my parents, they are constantly asking me for prints of the kids. So let’s make a vow that we will get these images off our hard drives and onto our walls or at least into an album to be enjoyed. I’m going to get that photo printed so that every time I walk by it, I’m reminded of that evening and how my daughter was at that time in her life. Time is so fleeting… I just want to remember it all one day when this whirlwind called life winds down some. So, join me, will you?

How I View Happiness… tomball family photographer

This is the third month in a series that I am participating in with other photographer’s from across the globe. Each month we have a new theme and we devote a blog post and images to that theme. You can see the past two months here and here. This month’s theme is “How I View Happiness”. There are lots of things that bring me joy in my life, but the thing that brings me the absolute most happiness is my family. This exact day, seven years ago, I married my college sweetheart in St. John surrounded by our closest friends and family. It was a very small and intimate wedding, only 30 people, but it was the most amazing day. I didn’t think I could be any happier. Then three years later we welcomed our first baby to the world and a few years later our second. With each child, I found more love and happiness than I thought ever possible. They are my world. I took these photos about a week ago when I was in Galveston for another family’s session on the beach. We were able to spend the weekend there relaxing and even my parents drove up one day! All my favorite people, hanging out at the beach enjoying our time together and just having fun… this is exactly how I view happiness. I’m not sure that it gets much better than this.

Big News… Tomball Photography Studio

As I said last week, I have some BIG news… I’m still in disbelief as I sit here writing this blog. When I first started out in this business I didn’t know what was in store for me exactly…. I knew what I wanted and I knew it was going to take a LOT of work. I have always dreamed of having a space to work out of in a cute boutique setting. When I found a property that fit this description and was up for lease I knew it was perfect for me. So after a lot of thought and a lot of discussing with my friends and family (who have been wonderfully supportive and helpful) I’ve signed a lease for a ridiculously cute space that Jennifer Dell Photography will now call home. With my new space I will be able to do more stylized mini-sessions as well as boudoir sessions (if you didn’t know I did that check out my boudoir site here). I will also be holding my photography classes for parents here too, which there will be a date announced for the next one this week.

I’m a little bit anxious and a wee bit nervous but mostly crazy excited to see where this new journey takes me. The new studio will be located in the Relics By the Railroad shopping area on Commerce Street in Tomball and I’ll be officially opening my doors on May 1st. I will also be hosting a girls day out event with a few really cool vendors (jewelry, children’s clothing, accessories, etc) to celebrate the grand opening the first weekend in May… to get your invitation please be sure to sign up for the newsletter (over on the left of the page) it’s going to be a lot of fun! 50 days… houston photographer

I started a 365 (+1) day photography project this year. Today is the 50th day. So for 50 days, I have taken a photo. I have tried hard to keep it as creative as I could. With this month being so rainy in Houston it’s been tough some days. Lots of low light shooting… which is good (it’s making me work harder and grow). Which is the point of the 365, it’s supposed to be a challenge. Most of the photos are centered around my children, so when I finish the project I’m going to have two albums made, one for each kiddo… and I don’t plan on stopping at the end of the year, I’m looking at this as a beginning… I’ve really enjoyed it here are a few of my favorite photos so far… If you want to see more, you can check out my personal 365 blog.
